He created this with high school friend Al Diaz. He painted Defacement (The Death of Michael Stewart) (1983) in response to the incident.

He died on 12th August 1988 at age 27 years old, of a heroin overdose at his home.

Basquiat used social commentary in his paintings as a tool for self-examination, and for identifying with his experiences in the Black community of his time, as well as attacking power structures and systems of racism.

I find it exceedingly unlikely that Jean-Michel Basquiat was straight, and I don’t think that considering his possible queerness does a disservice to his work or to his memory. New York in the 1970s was a failing city – especially downtown, where burnt out and abandoned buildings dominated entire city blocks. It looks back at the history of gay rights and celebrates how far we have come in the fight for equality.

Over this month we will look at the lives of people who made an impact in the fields of arts, culture and science, as well as being prominent figures in the LGBT+ community.

This February, we are proud to honour LGBT+ History Month, a month-long annual celebration and remembrance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender history.

In a 1993 essay about a Basquiat exhibition at the Whitney museum, hooks writes “Conflicted in his own sexuality, Basquiat is nevertheless represented in the Whitney catalogue and elsewhere as the stereotypical black stud randomly fucking white women. Concurrently, Keith Haring’s calligraphic activism, epitomized by his Silence = Death imagery, inspired Basquiat to address systemic violence more overtly in his public murals (Saggese 160).

Everybody who was anybody in the downtown art scene knew SAMO© - the pieces were even written about in the Village Voice. Initiatives such as MOCA LA’s 2022 symposium “Basquiat & the Body” and digital queer chronology archives ensure that his bisexual lens remains integral to ongoing scholarly discourse (MOCA LA Bulletin).

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s art embodies queerness as layered, performative, and resistant to singular narratives.

He left behind about two thousand pieces of pieces of art, his performance in Downtown 81, and many interviews, but no journals and certainly nothing like a will so his life has been eclipsed by his legend.
