With one of the biggest prides in Europe I think it would be rude for me not to return.

I am always looking for cities that have a great gay scene, where I can relax, be myself and be surrounded by warm and welcoming people; and Cologne delivered just that.

Beyond the Bars: Queer-Friendly Spots and Events

Insider Tip: Get the most out of your Cologne visit with guided tours!

Cologne's LGBTQ+ inclusivity extends far beyond just its dedicated bars.

A short train ride can transport you to a world of rolling vineyards, medieval castles, and sleepy villages. Gay cruising bars are in a separate section below.

There are a couple of other bars scattered elsewhere in the city but the ones I have listed will be the most popular and busy for you to visit:

Gay Bars in Schaafenstraße/Bermuda Triangle

This is where I chose to start my night and I am very happy that I did.

Here, one of the largest collections of modern art in Europe—including significant works by Warhol and Lichtenstein—awaits your keen eye. The inclusive vibe lasts all year round, especially in the "Bermuda Triangle" nightlife district. Many bars offer happy hour deals, which can help reduce costs. For more on transport after Cologne clubs, check options online.

  • Costs: Drinks prices in Cologne are moderate compared to other major European cities.

Get ready to discover the friendly atmosphere and diverse crowd that makes Cologne a top destination for queer travelers. It reminds me of Construction in Maspalomas!

    • Barcelon – a welcoming gay bar in the old town popular with locals and serving some Mediterranean vibes! If you come here make sure you have an appetite, I tried the dumplings (spinach, cheese and ham) and could not finish the portion!

It's a great place to feel comfortable and celebrated in Germany.

Cologne truly shines as a premier destination for LGBTQ+ travelers. This region not only offers stunning natural beauty but also a chance to explore the rich wine culture of Germany.

Cologne, with its eclectic mix of historical depth, artistic vibrancy, and LGBTQ+ friendliness, offers a uniquely enriching experience.

Cologne Pride, known locally as Christopher Street Day (CSD), is one of Europe's largest and most vibrant.

Cologne is one of Germany’s easiest cities to do queer travel in. Take a look at:

    • Kinkz (Schaafenstraße) – the name says it all.  This bar is popular with the leather crowd and one that does have a darkroom although this was out of action during my visit (so double check).
    • Pullermanns (Old Town) – Colognes oldest gay bar and gay cruising bar dating back to 1972!

The area around Alter Markt and Heumarkt provides another significant cluster of LGBTQ+ friendly places. From historic institutions to modern hotspots, Cologne offers welcoming spaces for everyone. Ex-Corner is famous for its warm, inviting atmosphere and friendly staff. I need to go back to try one of their summer pool parties!

    • Vulcanus – Colognes oldest gay sauna attracting the more mature crowd, found in the Old Town.

Things to do in Cologne for Gay Travellers

As tempting as it might be to fill your time with the wonderful LGBTQ+ scene in Cologne, you have to make sure to spend time exploring the city itself.

The city has some spectacular sights such as the Cologne Cathedral, it’s centred around the River Rhine for riverside walks and is very walkable (or very short metro journeys).

In particular, try and visit/do as many of the below as possible:

    Queer Walking Tour

This is going to be my number one recommendation.

I have also provided some other suggestions below.

Wasserturm Hotel Cologne, Curio Collection by Hilton

Once Europe’s highest water tower, the Wasserturm Hotel is now a 5* luxury property perfectly located in the heart of the city within walking distance or a short metro ride to most attractions.

The hotel is incredibly stylish and as it is housed in an old water tower, is architecturally stunning no matter where you wander.

I was fortunate enough to stay in one of the beautiful duplex suites and could have happily lived in that room, my mouth did drop when I first walked in.

Websites like Gay-Cologne.com or local event listings on sites such as Kölner.de (often with an LGBTQ+ section) are excellent starting points.
