The conversation opens up about Kerrion’s sexual orientation when he came out as bisexual on the Zeus Network show, “Bad Boys: Los Angeles” in 2022.

“For the record, there are people who say, ‘due to your son’s openness about his bisexuality,’ that was an issue,” King said. 

“Let me say something to you,” Franklin replied.

Franklin continued, “I told my son, ‘There will never be any situation in your life that I will ever stop loving you. The monolithic view of Christianity reasonably led many to believe that Kirk Franklin would not accept this, but his conversation with Newton revealed otherwise.

Kirk deserved all the flowers. I love you and my love for you is not based on who you love. From their previous relationship, both had a child. And because I know my son, I have the responsibility to take in totality the environment that I was in and I didn’t do a good job.”

Franklin owned up to the fact that the manner he spoke to Kerrion “wasn’t the best” and reconciling their issues hasn’t been a walk in the park.

We’re talking about human beings, men and women that God has created.”

He concluded by expressing that he wants all members of the LGBTQ community to know that God is on their side. And ain’t nobody gonna take my son away from me.”

The conversation deepened when Franklin admitted that his own sexuality had been questioned throughout his life. 

“Carlos, for most of my life, I’ve had my sexuality questioned,” Franklin shared.

He is a respected member of the religious community and has apologized on their behalf.

He stated in an interview with The Grio:

I want to apologize for all of the hurtful and painful things that have been said about people in the church that have been talented and gifted and musical, that we’ve used and we’ve embarrassed… and all this other horrible crap that we’ve done.

He added, “We have not treated them like people.

“They were just good people.”

The interview offered a refreshing look at Franklin’s emotional journey, and social media seemed to agree.
