Both Hurley and Maggi spoke to the importance of queer spaces when they came out. Now that’s before my time, but you know, being around all the gays, you know, you hear stories of the Balloon Saloon and the Giovanni’s and pictures and seeing different, hearing different things and different stories from those locations as well.

And one nice thing I liked about Chester Street is everybody knew that it was a gay bar, but everybody came.

“Then we sat down, we were like, we should do something about that.”

He says he wants to help people feel the same way he did when he went into places like C Street.

“One of the big things I personally miss is being able to just walk in, and it’s like, it’s kind of hard to describe, it’s like walking in, and then there’s no more tension.

CHAMPAIGN — Despite feeling like “there’s no shortage of queer people in Champaign,” finding the LGBTQ community in Champaign-Urbana wasn’t easy for 21-year-old Arden Hatch when she moved here in 2020 and came out as a trans woman.

“I think the community feels very disconnected,” she said.

Winters can be cold and snowy, with temperatures typically dropping to around 17ºF in January. In 1854, the Illinois Central Railroad extended its line through the region, but instead of passing directly through Urbana, it was laid two miles west, where the terrain was flatter. Champaign receives around 41 inches of rain, on average, each year, and about 20 inches of snow.

“We went from like five gay bars being open at once to zero in a matter of years,” he said.

“We want to be cognizant of the product we are producing so that we are positively impacting the downtown community.”

Plans for programming are full steam ahead, according to organizers. The significance of these settings and LGBTQ+ venues can create a much-needed support system for young queer people as they openly explore their identities.

“My proposal was to turn it into an LGBTQ+ space for the community,” Maggi said.
